Yankari Game Reserve is one of Nigeria’s most popular tourist attractions, located in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State, about 110 kilometres from Bauchi metropolis.
The reserve is renowned for its rich wildlife, natural environment and warm-water springs, attracting visitors from different parts of Nigeria and beyond.
Yankari was established as a game reserve in 1956. It was later designated a national park in 1991 before being returned to the management of the Bauchi State Government.
The reserve is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including elephants, baboons, hippopotamuses, crocodiles, antelopes and several species of birds. It is particularly famous for its population of African elephants.

Visitors can explore the reserve through guided safari trips, during which they may encounter elephants, baboons, antelopes, hippos and other wild animals in their natural habitat.
One of the most popular attractions in Yankari is the Wikki Warm Spring. The spring is known for its clear, warm water, which remains at a relatively constant temperature throughout the year. Many visitors come to the site to swim, relax and enjoy the surrounding natural environment.
Another major attraction is the Marshall Caves, which contain ancient rock paintings believed to provide evidence of human activities in the area many years ago. The caves offer visitors an opportunity to learn more about the history and culture associated with the region.
The Gaji River also passes through the reserve and serves as an important source of water for some of the wildlife.
Beyond tourism, Yankari Game Reserve plays an important role in wildlife conservation. It provides a protected environment for animals and contributes to efforts to safeguard wildlife from threats such as poaching and the destruction of natural habitats.

The reserve also provides an opportunity for visitors to learn about nature, wildlife and the importance of conservation.
Yankari contributes to the tourism sector and local economy of Bauchi State. Visitors who come to explore its wildlife, warm springs, caves and natural scenery create business opportunities for communities and service providers around the reserve.
In conclusion, Yankari Game Reserve remains an important tourist destination in Nigeria. Its diverse wildlife, warm springs, caves, rivers and natural landscape make it a unique destination for tourists and nature lovers.
Protecting and properly managing the reserve is essential to ensuring that its natural resources and wildlife are preserved for future generations.
